Anna Lee is coming to visit!

Sorry I've been so bad about writing on my blog! It's been almost a whole month since my last post. Mamma said that since it's summer, I can have a vacation from writing in both Italian and English, and I guess I just got lazy! 

Yesterday Mamma told me really exciting news that I just had to write about - Anna Lee Merced is coming to visit me!!! We spend summer vacation at my grandparents' house on Long Island, so that's where Anna Lee is coming. I'm going to take her lots of fun places, especially the beach, because she's never seen the Atlantic Ocean. She's going to get here really soon and I just can't wait! I started cleaning my room last night so that everything would be especially nice for Anna Lee.

Happy Birthday, Mamma!

Buon Compleanno, Mamma!

Oggi è il compleanno della mia mamma. Felicity ed io abbiamo deciso di fare i biscotti per lei. Abbiamo fatto i amaretti, i biscotti italiani di mandorla, e sono stati deliziosi! Ecco la ricetta che abbiamo usato.

Today is my Mamma's birthday. Felicity and I decided to make cookies for her. We made Amaretti, Italian almond cookies, and they were delicious! Here's the recipe that we used.




Italian Almond Cookies

Ingredients

• 2 1/4 cups blanched whole almonds (about 12 ounces), plus 15 for garnishing
• 2/3 cup sugar
• 2 large egg whites, at room temperature
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract
• 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preparation

Arrange racks in upper and lower thirds of oven and preheat to 350°F. Lightly oil 2 large baking sheets, then line with parchment paper.

In food processor, combine 2 1/4 cups almonds and 1/3 cup sugar. Process until finely ground, scraping down sides once or twice. Set aside.

In electric mixer fitted with whisk attachment, beat egg whites and salt at high speed until soft peaks form. Reduce speed to medium and gradually sprinkle in remaining 1/3 cup sugar. Return speed to high and beat mixture until stiff, shiny peaks form. Gently fold in ground almond mixture and almond and vanilla extracts.

Roll mixture into 1-inch balls, place 2 inches apart on baking sheets, and flatten slightly. Top each with an almond. Bake until cookies are golden, switching positions of pans halfway through, about 25 minutes. Cool on sheets 5 minutes, then transfer to racks to cool completely.

Cookies keep, wrapped, several days, or frozen, several weeks. Recrisp in warm oven.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

"Amaretti

According to legend, in the early 1700s, a Milanese bishop made a surprise visit to the town of Saronno in Lombardy. A young couple paid tribute to the bishop by welcoming him with their unique homemade cookies, made from crushed apricot kernels and almonds, egg whites, and sugar. The bishop so loved the cookies that he blessed the couple, and the recipe became a local favorite.

Today, bakeries throughout the region, and in Italian communities around the world, carry amaretti di Saronno, but it's worth the (small) effort to make them yourself. The recipe is simple, and fresh from the oven, they have a crisp-yet-tender texture that's beyond compare."

Dance Recital

Stasera è il mio recital finale per il mio corso di danza! Praticavamo per il recital per mese in classe, e io praticavo dappertutto a casa tutta questa settimana. Facciamo una danza di "Coppélia," un balletto famoso. Il personaggio di Coppélia è una bambola! E la prima ballerina di mettere in scena il ruolo di Coppélia nell'anno 1870 a Parigi era italiana. Mi piace molto la danza, ma sono un po' nervosa per il spettacolo.

Tonight is my dance class's final recital! We've been practicing for the recital for months in class, and I've been practicing all over the house this week. We're doing a dance from "Coppélia," a famous ballet. The character of Coppélia is actually a doll! And the first ballerina to play the role of Coppélia in 1870 in Paris was Italian. I really like the dance, but I'm a little nervous for the performance.

Il mio tutù è bellissimo - ha i piccoli fiori sulla gonna! Spero che io possa tenerlo, ma invece, dovrò divertirmi stasera al spettacolo.

My tutu is beautiful - it has teeny flowers on the skirt! I wish I could keep it, but I'll just have to enjoy wearing it tonight at the performance.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Oggi abbiamo festeggiato il cinque di maggio a scuola. Abbiamo mangiato il cibo messicano e abbiamo cantato le canzoni in spagnolo. Tutti dovevano portare un libro con un'aspetto della cultura messicana, e parlarne al classe. Con tre amiche, ho scelto "Meet Josefina," e ci abbiamo vestito come Josefina! 

Today we celebrated Cinco de Mayo in school. We ate Mexican food and sang songs in Spanish. Everyone had to bring in a book that had to do with some aspect of Mexican culture, and talk about it to the rest of the class. Along with three of my friends, I chose "Meet Josefina," and we all dressed up like Josefina!

Field Day

Domani è il giorno dei sport a scuola! Mi piace molto il giorno perché si va fuori per tutto il giorno e non si sede ma in un'aula! Non mi piace molto tutta la competizione, ma è un giorno molto divertente. I miei giochi preferiti sono di softball, basketball, e tiro alla fune. Questo è la mia mise nuova per il giorno dei sport.

Tomorrow is Field Day at school! I love Field Day because everyone goes outside all day and we never have to sit in a classroom! I don't really like all the competition, but it's a really fun day. My favorite games are softball, basketball, and tug-of-war. This is my new outfit for Field Day.

Earth Day

Oggi è la giornata per la Terra! A scuola, c'era un'assemblea, e abbiamo imparato modi in cui possiamo aiutare a proteggere l'ambiente. Abbiamo imparato del riciclaggio e altre cose che possiamo fare. Poi siamo andati fuori, e ogni classe ha piantato il suo albero nel cortile. Erano bellissimi insieme! In celebrazione della giornata per la Terra, ho scelto qualche foto di me stesso giocando fuori nella natura.

Today is Earth Day! At school, there was an assembly, and we learned ways in which we can help to protect the environment. We learned all about recycling and other things that we can do. Then we went outside, and every class planted its own tree in the courtyard. They looked beautiful all together! In celebration of Earth Day, I picked a few photos of myself playing outside in nature.

April Showers

Piovava tutto il pomeriggio. Avevo voluto giocare fuori dopo la scuola, ma invece, ho letto un po', ho fatto il mio compito, e poi ho guardato dalla finestra alla pioggia. Nonostante il mio disappunto che non potevo andare fuori, provavo a ricordare che gli acquazzoni d'aprile portanto i fiori di maggio! Con speranza, si vedrà molti fiori fra poco. Farà 70 gradi e più questo week-end...non posso aspettare per la primavera!

It rained all afternoon. I had wanted to play outside after school, but instead, I read a bit, did my homework, and then I looked out the window at the rain. Despite my disappointment that I couldn't go outside, I tried to remember that April showers bring May flowers! Hopefully we'll see lots of those flowers soon. It's supposed to be in the 70's this weekend...I can't wait for spring!

Happy Easter!

Buona Pasqua!

In italiano c'è un detto, "Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi." Ma io penso che questo sia un po' sciocco, perché mi piace celebrare la Pasqua con la mia famiglia! Abbiamo le tradizione e il cibo per la Pasqua che mi piacciono molto, come il pane dolce con un'uova nel centro. Facciamo anche una torta salata, un po' come un keish, con le uova, il formaggio, e il prosciutto. Di solito, mangiamo l'agnello arrostito per il pasto, e finiamo con La Pastiera Napoletana, una pizza di grano. È molto dolce e cremosa, fatto con la ricotta. E mi piacciono anche la caramella di Pasqua, come Peeps e le caramelle alla frutta!

In Italian there's a saying, "Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi," which means "Christmas with your family, Easter with whomever you want." But I think this is a little silly, because I like to celebrate Easter with my family! We have traditions and food for Easter that I love, like Easter bread, which is sweet bread with a hard-boiled egg in the center. We also make a salty pie, a little like quiche, with eggs, cheese, and ham. Usually we eat roasted lamb for the main meal, and we finish with La Pastiera Napoletana, which is also called grain pie. It's a dessert pie that's very sweet and creamy, made with ricotta cheese. And I also love Easter candy, like Peeps and jelly beans!

Celebrating Passover

Ieri sera, sono andata a un seder per la Pasqua ebraica. Oggi è il primo giorno delle vacanze di primavera, così sono andata dalla mia amica Elizabeth per una festa a pigiama! Io sono solo un quarto ebrea, perché il mio nonno è ebreo, ma Elizabeth è ebrea cento per cento, e da lei, si celebre la Pasqua con un seder. Al tavolo del seder, Abbiamo raccontato la storia della Pasqua, abbiamo cantato le canzoni, e poi abbiamo mangiato il cibo delizioso. Mi piacciono di più le polpette di matzoh in minestra, e il haroset, una pasta di frutta e noci (e cannella!) che si mangia con il matzoh.

Dopo il seder, Elizabeth ed io abbiamo guardato il film "Il Principe d'Egitto," che racconta la storia della Pasqua. Ha fatto molto paura in qualche parte, specialmente quelle con le dieci peste, ma era un buon film. Questa canzone è bellissima, è la mia parte preferita nel film. È il bambino Mosè nel cestino - è carinissimo, no?

Last night, I went to a seder for Passover. Today is the first day of spring break, so I went to my friend Elizabeth's house for a sleepover! I'm only one-quarter Jewish, because my grandpa is Jewish, but Elizabeth is 100% Jewish, and at her house they celebrate Passover with a seder. At the seder table, we told the Passover story, sang songs, and then we ate delicious food. I liked the matzoh ball soup and the haroset, a topping made with fruit, nuts and cinnamon that you eat with matzoh, the best!

After the seder, Elizabeth and I watched the movie "The Prince of Egypt," which tells the Passover story. It was really scary in some parts, especially the parts with the ten plagues, but it was a good movie. This song is beautiful, it's my favorite part in the movie. It's baby Moses in the basket - isn't he cute?

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Sono diventata malissimo a scrivere sul mio blog! Ma provo ad essere meglio questa primavera, vi promesso.

Venerdì è stato il "opening day" per gli Yankees allo nuovo stadio al Bronx. Mi piace il baseball e i Yankees, e quattro anni fa sono andata a Yankee Stadium per il giorno delle Ragazze Americane. Non posso credere che è stato tanto tempo fa! Mi piaceva moltissimo essere a una partita viva. È così diversa dalle partite sul TV! Ho ricevuto un'uniforme degli Yankees nella mia misura. Questi sono alcuni foto di quella partita. Spero che io possa andare a una partita nello nuovo stadio un giorno!

I've gotten horrible at writing on my blog! But I'll try to be better this spring, I promise.

Friday was Opening Day for the Yankees at the new stadium in the Bronx. I like baseball and the Yankees, and four years ago I went to Yankee Stadium for American Girl Day. I can't believe it was so long ago! I really liked being at a live game. It was so different from games on TV! I even got a Yankees uniform in my size. These are some photos from that game. I hope I can go to a game in the new stadium some day!

Luck o' the Irish

I'm not Irish, but I do take Irish step-dancing, and my dance school had a big St. Patrick's Day gala today. We were all really nervous, especially my class because it was our first time performing in front of a big audience, but it went really well! Our teacher said everyone has the Luck o' the Irish today. I know I promised to write in English AND Italian on my blog, but today I'm so tired from the recital that I can't!

After the recital, there was a big buffet of Irish food. My favorite was the Irish soda bread, and shamrock-shaped cookies with green sprinkles!

Home Sick

Oggi sono stata ammalata, e non sono andata a scuola. Nella mattina, mi sentivo malissimo, ma nel pomeriggio, mi sentivo meglio, e potevo giocare un po'. Ho giocato Tic-Tac-Toe con Mamma, e poi, abbiamo guardato "Il Mago di Oz," uno dei miei musicali preferiti!

Today I was sick, and I didn't go to school. In the morning, I felt terrible, but by the afternoon I felt a little better, and I could play a bit. I played Tic-Tac-Toe with Mamma, and then we watched "The Wizard of Oz," one of my favorite movie musicals!

Questa parte del film è meravigliosa - quando Dorothy si rende conto che la casa è il posto migliore nel mondo!

A Masked Ball

Questo week-end, sono andata a una festa per il Carnevale. Era un ballo in maschera! Carnevale è il periodo prima della Quaresima, come la celebrazione di "Mardi Gras," quando si festeggia moltissimo. In Italia, la celebrazione dura un paio di settimane, e si mangia i dolci e si canta le canzoni carnevalesche. Giovedì Grasso e Martedì Grasso (oggi!), nella settimana prima del Mercoledì delle Ceneri, sono i giorni più importanti delle feste. A Venezia, le celebrazioni sono i più famosi, ma si festeggia il Carnevale in tutta l'Italia. Ci sono i balli in maschera per il Carnevale, come la festa a cui sono andata! Si abbiglia nei costumi dell'età barocco, perchè nel settecento le feste di Carnevale erano grandissime.

This weekend, I went to a party for Carnival. It was a masked ball! Carnival is the period before Lent, like Mardi Gras, when everyone celebrates like crazy. In Italy, the celebrations last a few weeks, and everyone eats sweet treats and sings Carnival songs. Fat Thursday and Fat Tuesday (which is today!), in the week before Ash Wednesday, are the most important days of the celebration. The celebrations of Venice are the most famous, but Carnival is celebrated throughout Italy. There always masked balls for Carnival, just like the party I went to! Everyone dresses up in baroque costumes, because in the 18th century the Carnival celebrations were very elaborate.

Valentines!

Ho ricevuto molti biglietti di San Valentino oggi! Ho partecipato in uno scambio di biglietti, e ho ricevuto molti biglietti di San Valentino dolci e creativi.

I got lots of Valentines in the mail today! I participated in a Valentines exchange and I got lots and lots of sweet and creative Valentines.

Playing Dress-Up

Oggi, ho deciso di giocare ai travestimenti! Sto leggendo "Piccole Donne" di Louisa May Alcott, e volevo vestirmi come le sorelle March. Non so ancora quale sorella è la mia preferita, ma so che mi piacerebbe da morire una delle sorelle March!

Today, I decided to play dress-up! I'm reading "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott, and I wanted to dress up like the March sisters. I don't know yet which sister is my favorite, but I know that I would absolutely love to be one of the March sisters!


Assomiglio un po' una ragazza dal ottocento? A volte, spero che io fossi nata nel ottocento, perché mi piace da morire i vestiti bellissimi!

Do I look a little like a girl from the 1800s? Sometimes I wish I had been born in the 1800s, because I love love love the beautiful dresses!

Dreaming of Summer...

C'è tanto neve fuori! Lunedì era il giorno della marmotta, e Punxatawney Phil, la marmotta a Pennsylvania, ha visto la sua ombra, dunque ci saranno sei settimane più dell'inverno. Quando ho molto freddo, mi piace pensare delle poste calde. Queste sono le mie foto di Positano, una piccola città della spiaggia nel sud d'Italia, dove sono andata in vacanza l'estate scorsa..

There's so much snow outside! Monday was Groundhog's Day, and Punxatawney Phil, the groundhog from Pennsylvania, saw his shadow, so there will be six more weeks of winter. When I get very cold, I like to think of warm places. These are my photos from Positano, a small beach town in the south of Italy, where I went on vacation last summer.

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Xin Nian Kuai Le!

Questo vuol dire "Buon Anno" in chinese cantonese e chinese mandarino. Oggi è l'anno nuovo per molti paesi asiatici. A scuola, impariamo molto delle tradizioni di altre culture, e questa settimana abbiamo studiato l'anno nuovo lunare. Quest'anno è l'anno della mucca! Oggi a scuola, abbiamo avuto una celebrazione con le lanterne, per dare il benvenuto all'anno nuovo. Abbiamo mangiato le torte di riso appiccicose, perchè portano buona fortuna. Le sue dolcezza simboleggia una vita ricca e dolce, i strati simboleggiano l'abbondanza, e la forma circolare simboleggia il riunione familiare. E sono buonissime! Ti piace la mia lanterna? C'è una luce vero all'interno!

That means "Happy New Year" in Cantonese Chinese and Mandarin Chinese. Today is the new year for many Asian countries. In school, we learn a lot about the traditions of other cultures, and this week we studied the Lunar New Year. This year is the year of the cow! At school today, we had a celebration with lanterns, to welcome in the new year. We ate sticky rice cakes, because they bring good luck. Their sweetness symbolizes a rich, sweet life, their layers symbolize abundance, and their round shape symbolizes family reunion. And they're really good! Do you like my lantern? There's a real light inside!

Inauguration Day

Anche se non potevo votare nell'elezione, sono molto felice che Barack Obama sarà il nuovo presidente. Guardo il reportage dell'insediamento oggi - guarderai anche tu?

American Girl Place and more

Ieri era un giorno meraviglioso! Siamo andate a American Girl Place per pranzare e fare shopping.

Yesterday was a wonderful day! We went to American Girl Place to eat lunch and go shopping.

E la bambola che ho comprato a American Girl Place è...Felicity! Mi piace la storia coloniale americana, e i racconti di Felicity sono molto appassionanti. Lei è bellissima, sono così fortunata!

Birthday Surprises

Oggi è il mio compleanno! Stamattina, ho ricevuto una piccola bambola di legno di Pinocchio. Mi piace molto il libro di "Le Avventure di Pinocchio" di Carlo Collodi, è molto emozionante. Ho ricevuto anche un buono regalo di American Girl. Dopo l'avevo aperto, Mamma mi ha detto che domani, andiamo a American Girl Place per pranzare, e con il buono, posso comprarmi una bambola! Non vedo l'ora!

Today is my birthday! This morning, I got a small wooden Pinocchio doll. I love the book "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi, it's very exciting. I also got a gift certificate for American Girl. After I'd opened it, Mamma told me that tomorrow we're going to American Girl Place to have lunch, and with the gift certificate, I can buy myself a new doll! I can't wait!

Snow Day

Nevicava oggi! Anche se non era un giorno di scuola, quindi non era proprio un giorno di neve, mi sono divertita un sacco.

It snowed today! Even though it wasn't a school day so it wasn't an actual snow day, I still had a lot of fun playing in the snow. 

Non potevo stare ferma abbastanza lungo per Mamma di fare una foto definita. È un po' offuscata...ops! Ma non è bellissima la neve?

I couldn't stand still long enough for Mamma to take a clear picture. It's a little blurry...oops! But isn't the snow beautiful?

Dopo aver giocato fuori, mi sono riscaldata davanti il camino. Ho un po' di paura di fuoco, ma non mi dà fastidio nel camino quando è così accogliente.

After playing outside, I warmed up by the fireplace. I'm a little scared of fire, but I don't mind it in a fireplace when it's so nice and cozy. 

Dopo essermi riscaldata, ho giocato con il mio nuovo spazzaneve Hess che ho ricevuto per Natale. C'è un interruttore per accendere e spegnere le luci, e un'altro per muovere le ruote avanti e indietro. Si muove da solo! È fantastico. Volevo andare fuori ancora e provarlo nella neve, ma era già buio a quel tempo. Forse rimanerà un po' di neve domani! 

Once I was warmed up, I played with my new Hess truck snow plough that I got for Christmas. It has one switch to turn the lights on and off, and another that moves the wheels forward and in reverse. It moves by itself! It's so cool. I wanted to go outside again and try it in the snow, but by that time it was already dark out.  Maybe there'll be some snow left tomorrow!

La Befana came!

La Befana è venuta! 

La Befana è una simpatica strega italiana che porta dolcetti e regalini ai bambini per la festa dell'Epifania, il 6 gennaio. Secondo la leggenda, i Re Magi vennero dalla Befana la notte del 5 gennaio, e le dissero che andavano a vedere il Bambino Gesù. Le invitarono di andare con loro, ma lei stava spazzando la casa, e non poteva uscire prima di aver finito. Ma dopo aver rifiutato l'offerta di seguire i Re Magi, La Befana cambiò idea e voleva vedere il Bambino Gesù. Lasciò la casa in fretta con i doni per il bambino e con la sua scopa. Provò a trovare i Re Magi e il bambino Gesù, ma alla fine, non riuscì. Dunque, ogni notte del 5 gennaio, vola sulla scopa e porta le caramelle ai bambini buoni e il carbone ai bambini cattivi, mentre cercando il Bambino Gesù. Prima di andare a letto, ogni bambino appende un calzo per i regali, e lascia un bigliettino e un bicchiere di vino per La Befana.

La Befana è venuta da mia la notte scorsa, e mi ha portato i cioccolatini e anche un libro!

La Befana came!

La Befana is a nice Italian witch who brings candy and small presents to children on Epiphany, January 6th. According to the legend, the Three Kings came to La Befana's house on the night of January 5th, and told her they were going to see the Baby Jesus. They invited her to come with them, but she was sweeping the house, and couldn't go out before she finished. But after having refused the offer to follow the Three Kings, La Befana changed her mind and wanted to see the Baby Jesus. She left the house in a hurry with presents for the baby and her broomstick. She tried to find the Three Kings and the Baby Jesus, but she never did. Therefore, every night of January the 5th, she flies on her broomstick and brings candy to good children and coal to bad children, while searching for the Baby Jesus. Before going to bed, every child hangs up a sock for the presents, and leaves a note and a glass of wine for La Befana.
