A Masked Ball

This weekend, I went to a party for Carnival. It was a masked ball! Carnival is the period before Lent, like Mardi Gras, when everyone celebrates like crazy. In Italy, the celebrations last a few weeks, and everyone eats sweet treats and sings Carnival songs. Fat Thursday and Fat Tuesday (which is today!), in the week before Ash Wednesday, are the most important days of the celebration. The celebrations of Venice are the most famous, but Carnival is celebrated throughout Italy. There always masked balls for Carnival, just like the party I went to! Everyone dresses up in baroque costumes, because in the 18th century the Carnival celebrations were very elaborate.

Questa è la mia maschera!

This is my mask!

Questa era un'altra maschera alla festa.

This was another mask at the party.

These are two types of Carnival desserts - fritelle and galani. Both are sweet fried dough, and they're delicious!
Buon Martedì Grasso - Happy Mardi Gras / Fat Tuesday!

Love,
Livia

  3. My dolls are going to celebrate mardi gras with a parade and dancing. They made masks from a craft on the web site ourdolls.
    I like your mask, though!
